‘How the environment influences the stories that we tell’

This project involved creating a set of photographic pieces about how an environment influences the types of stories that we tell. The project is centred around photographing the remains of the mining industry, retired coal miners and the surrounding landscapes in North Wales.

The reason for choosing Bersham Colliery as the location for this photography project was due to it being one of the last locations in North Wales with mining equipment still there. Furthermore, a group of retired miners are involved in restoring the buildings and equipment in order to turn them into a museum for new generations to learn about the coal mining industry in North Wales.

I would like to thank the National Union of Miners, The North Wales Miners Association for their help and the retired miners at the Hafod Social Club for sharing their stories.

A special thank you to Colin, Allan, Ken and Terry for providing me with so much information, agreeing be photographed and giving me access to Bersham Colliery.
